You’re finally near the end of your journey--after waiting for days to be pre-approved, spending countless hours scouring the Edmonton MLS for that dream Edmonton property, viewing Open Houses and submitting offers… you’re at the finish line at last, the move-in!
Just like all the other activities prior to the move-in, you have to take several steps in order to make certain that everything go without a hitch. Below is a checklist of things that you will need to do before you officially move in to your new Edmonton residence.
SCHEDULE THE MOVERS
Upon confirmation of the exact date of your move-in, you must immediately book a moving schedule. Don’t underestimate the volume of people using the services of local moving companies in Edmonton. You need to be first in line, not last, so don’t waste your time procrastinating.
You will need help in carrying a bunch of furniture, personal belongings and equipment; so let the experts help you do this.
Yelp provides a good list of local moving companies. You can check some here: Edmonton Movers
Once you’re in possession of the keys to the property, make sure to have your local locksmith change all the locks of your front and backdoor. You can’t really know who has duplicates of the original keys so in order for you to have peace of mind; it’s best to simply change the locks.
CHANGE THE UTILITY ACCOUNTS
This is a reminder for you to change the water, electricity, telephone and cable accounts from your service provider. With all the excitement happening, you might forget to update the accounts. It’ll be bad if the electricity is still billed to the former owner.
PLAN YOUR RENOVATION
D-I-Y is good, but please don’t rush your renovations. The best way to preserve the structural integrity of the house is to carefully plan out any upgrades or improvements.
If you’re not too sure of what you’re doing, simply hire a professional like a general contractor in your area.
TRY TO PURCHASE APPLIANCES/FURNITURE IN ADVANCE
If you already know the missing appliances or furniture that you’ll need in your new residence, you may want to purchase it even before your official move-in. The idea here is for you not to wait 6-weeks for the delivery. You just have to make sure that it will fit the intended space.
The Internet is filled with awesome new-generation home security gadgets that you can install in your new residence. Unlike condominiums, owners of detached, semi-detached homes need to provide their own security system.
